Life Changes take on a life and style of their own

Life Changes for me started in my forties. You know that feeling of looking in the mirror and seeing someone you don't recognize. I wondered how this happened and when did I become the older generation? When did I go out of style? I certainly want to present myself in true fashion and not try to hang onto a look that no longer literally fits my age and mental status. I knew I needed to start doing something about these Life Changes and began to update style for me. How about you?

I started with my closet and took every ounce of clothing out of it. I invited a close friend to share a bottle of wine and we spent a couple of hours trying to update style by dissecting the clothes closet. If it had a stain or a tear it left. If I put it on and got the thumbs down or it didn't give me the feeling of greatness, it left. Outdated styles and wrong sizes went to the "goodwill" pile and some of the really nice items that of course were more expensive found their way to the "Consignment Box".

Purging offers more room for changes, growth and of course new purchases that enhance your best features. Isn't it a great feeling to open your closet door and know that everything and anything you pick is going to fit and is capable of making you look as good as you feel! Aren't Life Changes Grand? The days of changing 10 times before going out are over! It actually reduces stress level and blood pressure.

  1. Always keep the style of what you love and know you will wear
  2. Find a local consignment shop and get something back for your best items that have style but aren't for you
  3. Donate and get the receipt for items you know do not fit who you are anymore or...literally don't fit

Keep a suit jacket that looks great to wear with jeans or khaki's..the pants or skirt can leave but if that jacket looks and feels good..buy it a scarf or pin to liven it up!

Get a FREE stylish brooch with any $50 purchase. Splurge a little and get something free in return!

Now that I’ve cleaned out my closets and dressers I am finding what I have left is outdated styles or doesn’t make me feel empowered. I took the time to think about all those Life Changes and what looks good on me and not just trying to replace style choices I had made in the past.

  1. What type of work do I do now?
  2. Where do I socialize?
  3. How often do I actually dress up?
  4. How often do I try something on ?
  5. How long has it been since I actually wore it?
  6. How many of the same item do I already have?

When I answer these, then I eliminate more. When I look at what I have left, it’s time to fill in the gaps and buy some new pieces to enhance my looks, life and daily wardrobe. I'm literally redesigning my personal style. The easiest thing to start with is a new purse or just accessories depending upon my budget.

I have found that trying to keep clothes that no longer fit my style makes me feel bad about myself. Just because our Life Changes doesn't mean we can't still feel great about ourselves! If they are items you truly cannot part with, buy a container to store them in until you can use them or give yourself permission to give them up.

Big Girls Don't Have to Cry!

Pick out a couple of new items to go with what is left or to tide you over until some of your other goals start to kick in. Until then, ask yourself these questions when making a new purchase to avoid those same mistakes from before.

Life Changes became my new hobby. I had to trick those old mental outdated records playing in my head that doing all these things for myself were labeled as "selfish". Telling myself that I could take on a new hobby tricked the mind and it became really fun.

  1. What color is my skin?
  2. What color is my hair now (gray or dyed)?
  3. Do I use makeup now? Lipstick?
  4. Find colors to enhance your personal style and features.
  5. Again I will remind you to only choose a couple of items in current style and stick to what looks great.

About three years ago I started a “girlfriend nite” to invite women over 40 to shop together. After good long talks about our common "Life Changes" and finding out how badly some dress because they don’t know where to shop and get overwhelmed about picking things correctly for themselves this group shopping night developed. Even finding out about the type of old unmentionables still being utilized under work or nice clothes was very surprising.

Just Underthings specializing in Plus Sizes

If you need to purchase clothes and want to have more choices for that size 14 or more get your friends to help out. Make sure you get a promise that they will be honest. They can't let you leave the store with colors or sizes that don't enhance your positive attributes or body style. Remember you are looking to update style and feel empowered.

I've only agreed to share some of my secret places that I’ve found to work out great for late night quality shopping on the web because you asked. The sites on this page are starting to become some of my staples and others are suggestions from close friends.

I'll continue to add on when I feel prices are good and they have great styled items or clearance sales that help our shopping goals. Returns are easy and it saves a lot of time that some of you claim not to have. Maybe it will help you get started on updating and upgrading your look. Just know that you're worth it and Life Changes don't mean doom!!

That goes for you guys too! Guys still hang on to clothes that they wore in college. It's not just women who need to feel and look good about themselves....so, what are you waiting for? At least start cleaning out the sock drawer! If your embarrassed about your waistline or that you don't look good in a certain type of clothing, try shopping online. The salesperson can't see you and you can return what you don't like or doesn't fit. How about at least replacing those shoes with the worn out soles?

I love soaking in the bath and find this is a great self indulgence as well as a wonderful gift for certain close friends of mine who like luxury.

Even if I don't swim much, I do like the hot tub and sitting stylishly by the poolside. I decided I like myself just the way I am and I intend to continue to be a "work in progress" but you can be assured that while doing this, I will do it in style! Enjoy!
